Benefits and Leave Provisions
You currently have access to supplemental health and dental benefits, as well as long-term disability and life insurance, through your school board as part of your local collective agreement.
New OECTA Benefits Plan
A new provincial life, health, and dental benefits plan is being rolled out this year to eligible OECTA members. The new provincial plan will eventually replace the current plan you are enrolled in through your school board. Eligible members will transition to the new plan in waves, by unit, throughout the 2016-17 school year.
The new plan is designed and governed by the Employee Life & Health Trust (ELHT), which includes several OECTA members. The plan is administered by the Ontario Teachers’ Insurance Plan (OTIP) and underwritten by Manulife Financial.
All Eligible Members Will be Required to Enrol in the New Plan
Eligible members include all full- or part-time members employed by a Catholic school board, members teaching in long-term occasional assignments, and continuing education teachers. Daily occasional teachers are not eligible at this time
Enrolment is Not Automatic
School boards will work with OTIP to transfer existing information, but eligible members will be required to undertake an enrolment process to ensure their information is complete and accurate. Failure to complete the enrolment process on time could result in a break in your benefits coverage.
Your Benefits May Change
The new plan has no deductibles or waiting periods and will result in enhanced coverage and/or a reduction in premiums for most members. However, there may be certain limitations, restrictions, or exclusions that apply. A Benefits Plan Guide will be included in your enrolment package, which will outline your benefits coverage. You will receive your enrolment package when your unit is scheduled to transition. The next wave of units to transition to the OECTA Benefits Plan is expected to take place February 1, 2017.
